What an app store score tells you — and what it doesn't

A single number compressing thousands of opinions loses most of what made them worth reading. Some specifics worth knowing:

  • Scores skew to the extremes. People rate when delighted or furious. The middle is under-represented.
  • Prompts shape the number. Apps that ask for a rating at a good moment score better than apps that don’t ask at all.
  • An average hides its own history. A long-standing app can carry years of old ratings that say nothing about the current build.
  • Volume matters more than the score. 3.9 from thousands of reviews is a far more meaningful signal than 4.8 from forty.
  • Localisation matters. Play surfaces reviews by region and language; what you see may differ from what someone else sees.

How to read Waho's reviews properly

Ten minutes on the listing itself beats any summary, including this one:

  1. Open the Play listing and scroll to ratings and reviews.
  2. Sort by most recent. Recent reviews describe the build you’d actually be installing.
  3. Read the 3-star reviews. They’re usually the most specific — the people who liked parts of it and can tell you which parts.
  4. Look for repeated specifics. One person reporting crashes is noise; forty people reporting the same crash on the same phone is a finding.
  5. Check developer replies. Whether and how a developer responds tells you something about support.
  6. Discount the extremes. One-line five-star and one-line one-star reviews carry almost no information.

Why there are no testimonials on this site

Sites in this category often publish quoted “user reviews” that can't be traced to anyone. We don't, for a straightforward reason: we have no way to verify a review we didn't receive, and a fabricated testimonial is a lie regardless of how positive it is.

So this page carries Google Play's figures with attribution, and nothing else. Our editorial policy sets out what we will and won't publish, and how we fact-check covers where our numbers come from.
